What are LED luminaires and do they save energy? Modulux LED luminaires are energy saving lighting fixtures used in Commercial and Industrial applications. They are a super energy efficient energy saving alternative designed to replace incandescent, fluorescent, CFL, metal halide, high-pressure sodium and halogen light lighting. Modulux luminaires will reduce your energy consumption by at least 60%, and as much as 80%, depending on the light you choose and the light we are replacing. With LEDs lasting up to 100,000 hours, we can also reduce your maintenance on your lighting, eliminate replacement bulb inventory and improve overall lighting quality in your facility.

Why is energy efficiency important?

Energy efficiency means using less energy to accomplish the same task. By improving your energy efficiency, you reduce the size (and cost) of the renewable energy system needed to power your facility. Improving your energy efficiency is the first and most important step toward adopting renewable energy.

The more efficient use of energy throughout our country results in less money spent on energy by schools, government agencies, businesses, and industries. The money that would have been spent on energy can instead be spent on consumer goods, education, services, and products. How do they work? LED luminaires are comprised of 3 main components: the LED assembly (commonly called “the light engine”), the power supply (converts AC to DC) and the cooling system (heat sink and active cooling). LEDs use DC power from the power supply and convert electrical energy into light. Keeping things cool is a critically important requirement for LED lighting. Modulux has developed patent pending techniques that keep the light engine cool so that high efficiency and more light can be produced to yield best in class price performance.

What are the key benefits of LED vs. traditional lighting?

-LED products are highly recyclable – they do not contain mercury or other hazardous materials
-Evenly distributed high quality LED lasts a very long time, typically 50,000 to 100,000 hours (over 5-10 years of    continuous operation!)
-An immediate reduction in your electricity bill

Do they contain any hazardous or heavy metals like Mercury? No. LED bulbs do not contain mercury or any other hazardous metals or chemicals. CFL’s and fluorescents do contain a very small amount of mercury that needs to be disposed of correctly. So when your LED luminaire eventually stops working, you don’t have to worry about costly or special disposal procedures.

What color temperatures are available with LED? Color temperature for light bulbs is measured on the Kelvin scale. LEDs come in a variety of colors, but the most common are in a range from 2700K to 7500K. Older lighting technologies used terms such as Day White, Natural White, Warm White and Cool White, to describe light color. In general, the warmer the light, the more yellow tones, the cooler the light, there are more blue tones.

Modulux luminaires are offered in six different color temperature ranges:

2700-3200 – WW – Warm White
4000-4500 – NW – Natural White
5000-5500 – DW – Day White
6500-7500 – CW – Cool White

Are aesthetic options available with LED? Due to the modular design of our luminaires, Modulux can offer a variety of decorative bezels and faceplates to meet a diverse range of customer needs. Commercial and Industrial lighting no longer has to look bulky and ugly!

How does an LED luminaire compare size and weight wise with traditional commercial lighting fixtures? In most cases, Modulux luminaires are considerably smaller in size and much lighter in weight. This makes our luminaires less costly to ship and easier to install. LED technology packs a lot of light into a small package.

What are the advantages of LED vs. CFL? Although they are efficient in comparison with Incandescent, halogen and HID, LEDs are still over 2x as energy efficient as CFL.

  • CFL’s contain a small amount of mercury.
  • LED bulbs are instant on, instant off. CFLs take 30 seconds to 1 minute to warm up after they are turned on
    LED bulbs are not affected by turning them off and on. CFL bulbs are, as this will reduce their life.
  • CFL tubes are fragile, and must be carefully disposed of.

 Can LEDs be used in outside lights? Yes. In order to be used outdoors, luminaires must be designed with water-proof fittings. Another option is to enclose the luminaire inside a water-tight enclosure. It is important to read all instructions and manuals before using LED luminaires outdoors.

Will LED light levels decrease over the life of the product? Eventually, Yes. However, properly engineered luminaires will maintain high light levels for a long time. The good thing is that the human eye can hardly notice an instantaneous depreciation of 30%.

How long do luminaires last and what sort of warranty is associated with your LED bulbs? Modulux luminaires come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty. Warranties only apply for normal use of the product and do not include misuse or usage for which the luminaire was not intended to perform. Modulux warranties are parts-only warranty. We do not cover the cost of labor or shipping.
